One of the most important things I learned from past editors is how to effectively critique others' work. Simply marking things you don't like and handing it back with no further advice or even praise won't result in progress. Back when I was a staff writer, my editors, Hannah France and Ally Stroh would always have a mini conference with each writer to discuss the article and suggest changes for improvement. Seeing how much this method helped me, I now apply it to my staff writers. This helps writers understand why the changes are necessary and establishes trust between the editors and the staff.
