One of my most important roles as an editor is leading the issue planning meetings. The days leading up to planning day, each of us writes down five story and page design ideas. On the day of the meeting, everybody gathers on couches around a whiteboard. Before the 2018-2019 school year, I had always worked on a staff of around twelve. This year, I am working on a team of five. Doing this with a small staff is challenging, as everyone has many ideas of things to cover and sometimes there simply aren't enough bodies. However, this doesn't mean we can't accomplish great things; all we need is organization. After I assign stories, I have everyone write their own deadlines. This method of allowing the staff to set realistic due dates has allowed them to make significantly more progress in their reporting, and in the last few days before print we aren't scrambling to get content to fill pages.
